  • Hostgator Review by attuk – 3 Years with Hostgator – A big mistake !

    Hostgator used to provide a reasonable service. They made frequent billing mistakes, but corrected them as soon as they were notified. Unfortunately this has changed significantly during the recent months and HG is a nightmare to deal with.

    Due to 2 paypal subscriptions I have been overpaying for some time.

    1. When I pointed this out I was told that this was not the case ! By 3 different of their administrators
    2. Then I had to check both paypal accounts and provide the transaction ids for overpayments.
    3. Now they acknowledge that there were 10 overpayments, but still refuse to check the account for overpayments during the previous months.
    4. HG dosn’t refund overpayments but apply them as credit so 10 overpayments = 10 more months with them.
    5. The charge $75/ hour to transfer sites between their own servers !
    6. There is no compensation at all for the inconvenience !

    I must say the support is really the worst I have experienced with any other company. You have mail so many times then also the problem doesn’t gets solved and when it comes to the public forums it gets solved instantly.

    Why would I purchase an Elite Dedicated Server (and pay over $200) when I can’t even run 10-15 sites out of which only 2-3 sites rcv good traffic. I really getting frustrated with the support and their silly answers.

    I’m a new customer. I heard about HostGator while reading posts by VOIPoTim in the VoIP Tech Chat forums. Support at my old host seems to have gone south so I thought I’d make the move from shared hosting to VPS. (As an aside: for those who are still using shared hosting, having root access ROCKS!)

    I have recently had a minor medical procedure that’s been waking me up at night. Last night I couldn’t get back to sleep so decided to do some work on the server. I noticed loads were high and discovered someone was trying to brute force my root password. cPanel has brute force protection but I wanted to get loads back down so I tried to block their IP at the firewall. For some reason this didn’t work so I put in a ticket. Imagine my astonishment when I had a reply from Michael K in the security department in just six minutes! He suggested a workaround which worked well. But that’s not the best part. It was 4:00 A.M.! You all advertised 24/7 support but truthfully I didn’t actually believe it.

    Considering I’ve a ticket open for over a month with my old host about a positively trivial matter, this is without question an improvement.

    Thanks, HostGator! If everything’s as good as the first week has been I’m sure I’ll be around a while. Michael, I hope I didn’t wake you up, but thank you for helping me out

    I’ve submitted this to the feedback email but I’m also posting it here because I feel the community should be able to respond. I know I’m not the only one having these issues.

    Here is a copy of the email I sent to feedback@hostgator.com:

    To whom it may concern:

    I have been a customer with Host Gator for many many years now and have always been impressed with your service. Especially through the live chat system. It has been my experiences with the live chat techs that has made me confident enough in you to be at a point where I now have 2 managed dedicated servers and one separate reseller account with you.

    Over the course of the last 6 months or so the quality of the help available via live chat has fallen dramatically. They no longer try to help at all. They simply refer you to submit a ticket which takes a long time to get a response to. This is not the level of service I’ve come to expect from HostGator and honestly the recent chat’s I’ve had with the chat techs have left me so disappointed that I’m no longer able to recommend HostGator to friends and colleagues.

    I would really like you to look into what has happened with the live chat system and do what it takes to bring that quality of service back. It’s what sold me on HostGator years ago and what’s kept me growing with you even though I’m capable of just renting the servers unmanaged elsewhere. On the flip side of that coin if this service doesn’t improve it’s also what will cause me to make the difficult choice to go elsewhere.

    March 2010 will make four years since I have been a reseller with Host Gator and I am still as happy as the day when i switched from my previous host who was set to evil lol.

    Their customer support is knowledgeable and helpful, and they are always there!!! Most recently, Samuel H. provided me with a solution that saved me a considerable amount of time. He was courteous and a pleasure to talk to.
    Great service as usually.

    While my client base is small, whenever I have a problem my server or any other issues, I typically had a resolution within 4 or less hours.

    Unlimited webhosting may not technically exist but what hostgator are offering is pretty close…

    My site is now pushing over 100 gigabytes per day happily.
