  • Hostgator Review by LLVFC292Webmaster – Host Gator…CRUSHED their competition!

I recently transferred my 2 websites to HG. My old host who will remain nameless was good in ways but bad in a lot more. I was referred to HG by a friend on a photographer forum and I was bewildered at their statistics on their hosting plans!

200 GB of Disk Space?! THAT really is only the beginning of what one me over!
2,000 GB of bandwidth?! Thats the 2nd portion, but when I saw all the included programs, and add-ons, I just decided right then and there, HG is the way to go!

Also, my old host didn’t have hotlink protection, HG does, another feature I love. I am a fire buff as well as a firefighter and the webmaster for the department, and i take my photography highly seriously, I’d love not have people linking ot my images!

Hello all! We have had our domain (resaleworld.com) hosted with HostGator for years now – at least 4 years I believe. This past month or so, has been just terrible! I guess everyone is familiar with the “upgrades” that were done recently. I’m not sure how badly everyone else was impacted, but for us…

    - we had no emails for 24+ hours
    - many mission-critical libraries (PEAR, OpenSSL, etc.) were not installed when we were “upgraded” – this leading to many of our PHP-driven pages as well as our shopping cart to no longer function
    - our databases (for forums AND our store) were restored (without our permission) to a date that caused us to lose 48 hours worth of data! During the days that followed, they then re-restored our database AGAIN, causing us to lose a week’s worth of data!

This morning, we were (to say the least) stunned when we found our account had been suspended due to “abuse.” From the ticket created by HostGator, is was clear that something malicious had been executed server-side. After some “troubleshooting” (I use that term VERY loosely), we took a look at our cgi-bin directory. Well, it looks like there are a bunch of new CGI scripts in there – particularly cgiemail. Where’d those come from? Yup, you guessed correctly – HostGator. These files were added on 2/8/2007. They are available also via the CPanel in the CGI Scrips section.

My request for SSH with ability to use wget was handled within the hour, and once I was connected, I found the performance in terms of unzipping files astonishing.

30s to unzip a 1GB zip archive of 4600 files – the same file took 4 minutes to unzip on my current DreamHost account and 1m55s to unzip on my desktop machine (which has a AMD 3500+, 2GB RAM, 74GB Raptor)

I came to Hostgator in 2005. I had two other Hosts before that, and my site kept getting hacked. When I came to Hostgator, I was pretty happy with the service. I did have to upgrade to a semi-dedicated server, but I thought it would be ok. Less down time.

Now I run a simple Fan site. However I deal with large companies such as Warner Brothers and Mattel. So of course I need my site to be up and running all the time.

Recently that has been the case. I’ve had Bandwitdh problems. Those were cleared up, then there was connection problems. Those seem to have been cleared up. Now, today, my site has been up and down. I talked to live Suppoort twice. The first time I was given no explantion why it was down, but it seemed to be fixed. The second time, it came up, and I was told there was no problem.

  • Hostgator mbox to maildir conversion — Mail Services

Reviewed on February 16th, 2007 webhost Find more

There have recently been some problems regarding a newest cpanel update assuming the format/structure of mailboxes to be of the “maildir” format, rather than mbox. This causes authentication problems. We have decided to go ahead with the conversion to maildir as a solution as the newer format is more effecient.

  • Hostgator Review by marcand – 9 Months With Hostgator

Reviewed on February 16th, 2007 webhost Find more

Well, I just wanted to post my two cents worth about hosting with Host Gator. I have used another leading competitor for several years, when I found out about the unlimited domain hosting with Host Gator. That’s really what drew me in to the service.

I’ve been with Host Gator for just over 9 months now, and we (my wife and I) currently host 10 domains on our account, with 7 of the ten actually being active. We have been very pleased with the service and have not experienced any down time that we are aware of. We are avid net users, and are online probably 18-20 hours a day, so I think we would have noticed.

The only tech support issue I did experience was regarding fake spammy e-mails using my domain on the “return” address. I was concerned about firewalls at ISPs like AOL, MSN, and others possibly blacklisting my domain because of these e-mails. The live tech told me what would need to be done, but that I would need to submit a ticket. I did so, requesting that the fix be put in place, and the task was completed and tested within 24 hours.

GAINESVILLE – So Florida’s winning the national championship got you thinking about the good ol’ days when you used to play football? Or maybe you’re just fantasizing about what it’s like being one of the players?

With a little extra cash, you can dust off your cleats and live some Gator glory.

Flashback Camps, a Los Angeles-based company run by former Southern Cal and NFL wide receiver Rod Sherman, will host Gator Flashback Football, a fantasy camp for grownups, April 19-21. There will be sessions with Urban Meyer and the UF staff, former Florida players, picture and autograph sessions, a personalized jersey and locker name plate, a private team dinner and an awards ceremony.

Camp is open to men and women, ages 25 and up. The cost is $6,000 for owners, $4,500 for coaches and $2,500 for players. Owners will evaluate and draft players they can also compete, players will work out in drills and competitions, and “coaches” will draft and interact with UF coaches.

    In case you were wondering

Last week we told you about soccer player Ashley Harris, who was asked by softball coach Tim Walton to join the team to add a little speed. Harris, who has never played softball, was 4-for-5 in stolen bases and scored the team’s first run of the season last weekend. Harris will be even busier Saturday: The soccer team plays its first match of the spring season at 7 p.m.; the softball team has games at 1:30 and 4 p.m. against Marshall.
