  • Hostgator Review by David – Good Support Experience & 6 Month Update

Reviewed on December 25th, 2004 webhost Find more

I had a problem the other day with FTP permissions being messed up and it wasn’t allowing me to change permissions to what I wanted. Well, after a few emails back and forth, support was able to get everything sqaured away for me in fairly short order. Thank you Christine.

On another note, we’ve been with HG for about 6 months now. First on shared and then for the past few months on a reseller plan. Overall we have been very pleased with the experience thus far. There have been a few outages, but luckily they were brief except for one which I think had to do with a router failure or something similar. We’ve been especially pleased with the performance vs. previous hosts. Most of our usage is http file transfers and most of the time they are very fast.

A lessons learned for everyone else: If you have a critical or even important issue email support or call the toll free number, don’t try using chat support. Not that we have needed support that much, but I have always gotten quick response via email or phone. Hoping that things will continue to go well and we can stay here for quite some time.

I’ve been here almost close to a month now…I can’t seem to understand the continious bashing of the support team here…I’ve yet to find a single complaint with either their hosting or support! My web site has been up 100%, and every question I throw at support, they’ve answered to my satisfaction within a couple of minutes!

I’m glad I’m here…every other reseller I evaluated didn’t even come close to what Hostgator had to offer…

  • Hostgator Review by hades20082 – Inadequate support & Rude Staff

I feel it important to share my experience so far with Hostgator.

My company have been using Hostgator’s reseller package for several months and so far I must say that I am less than impressed.

Within a couple of weeks we were experiencing problems. All of our sites would be down for hours at a time and when we contacted support once we noticed the only response we got was “Fixed” or “Problem Solved”.

When we asked what the problem was they wouldn’t tell us.

They even blocked me on MSN Messanger several times for asking for more information about the problem.

From our own investigation it looked as though it had something to do with the \var partition.

Things ran smoothly for a while and I setup a browser based game on the account. The game was called Quantum Star. It is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database.

I have run this exact same software on several other hosts before and since and never had any problems. It even ran on Lycos’ free hosting without a problem.

Sent a quick e-mail to the sales team, and less than an hour later everything was up an running beautifully.

  • Hostgator Review by programmer – Great!

I must post this. I have only signed up today, but thus far, my experience with Hostgator has been amazing!

Firstly, I’ve heard great things about Hostgator, especially on www.webhostingtalk.com . That’s why I came in the first place.

The prices are pretty good; affordable for me, anyway. The registration was very easy, and I think I got my e-mail within two minutes. Ten minutes later, i was in WHM configuring my packages.

Oh, and the other amazing thing is that WHM AutoPilot is provided for free! I’m excited to take advantage of some of the other services ASAP.

There is good documentation on all of the features, too.

Anyway, I have no complaints whatsoever. I really look forward to my time spent here.

  • Hostgator Review by BradCis – email support – not much help

I recently went for a bit of coding help via email *support@hostgator.com* and they turned me down. They said ‘we dont help with coding’. I don’t understand what support is here for if they cant help with simple php coding.

  • Hostgator Review by perrypoint – ‘Live’ support seems clueless

Reviewed on December 18th, 2004 webhost Find more

I just switched to hostgator two days ago.

The positive: I love the plans and the pricing – since I have 8 domains that are just tiny little things with almost no traffic, the plan structure works well for me.

The negative: The tools are poorly explained/documented and support has some serious issues.

I had two questions that I contacted support about (via IM) today.

First, I was trying to ask about using SSL with IMAP, and if there was some kind of shared certificate I can use to encrypt the stream. Since the purpose of the cert. is for encryption, I don’t care about whose certificate it is, I just want the stream encrypted.

So, I contact the guy through IM, and ask him about security in IMAP. He tells me that I can “try checking the box for secure connection in Outlook”. Of course I had already done that, and can’t connect that way. He then wants to know about what SMTP port I am using. I nicely informed him that IMAP has nothing to do with SMTP. He said “ok” and then never came back, so I just gave up.

Secondly, I created some email lists, which don’t seem to be working. I again try the live support. The guy basically takes well over an hour to set up another mail list on my domain, and then asks me for my email name and password so he can send email to it. I told him to send to it via his own account, and so he agrees to try it. He verifies that it doesn’t work. Now I’ve been IMing and waiting for over an hour. He tells me to send email to support@hostgator.com. I said “I thought you were support”. He says “yes we are support”. So I ask him why I should send him an email about a problem we’ve already been through for over an hour.
