Hostgator Review by tiger – my dreams are becoming nitmares
Reviewed on July 30th, 2004 Find morein the past week i have had 2 major problems that could of been handled much better.
First horrible experiece:
I called to ask about a free service you advertise. This was something you left me on your 24/7 instant help forever without giving me an answer. YOu finally told me i would have to email support with my “problem”, (simple question really). I was horrified to come home from work and find soo many emails from my customers about thier sites being dead. When i got ahold of you via phone you where supprised at the problem since you ‘SIMPLY CHANGED MY USER NAME’ !
Current horror story:
im getting many emails again, customers sites are down, i research and then get you on your instant help desk, all at once everything comes back on. mabe just a passing glitch??
One hour latter, the sites are down again, i get on help desk, in 40 minutes i get a total of 3 words equalling 8 letters from you, 2 oks, and a yes. none of which answered anything. after your answer of “yes” that made no sense i asked for something to give my customers more than a 3 letter word. do you have any time estamites? You coldly answered ok, (now a 2 letter response), and cut off communication. This bold and in my book very unproffessional response is losing you a customer that was on verge of upgrading.
edited/added later;
my sites are now up, if a simple “we will work on this and let you know as soon as its done!” was so hard for you to say??? my sites where only down for about 3 hours but your total lack of communication made it seem so much longer. Out of 6 months of service with you guys my only real complaint is in the way you handle questions. I really dont just blurt out questions, I actually research personally to make sure its not simply something on my side. -
Hostgator Review by jmgb – I think everyone has trouble with the support
Reviewed on July 30th, 2004 Find moreTHIS IS IN REPONSE FOR WHAT OTHER CUSTOMERS WERE SAYING:
Yeah, I´ve also had trouble with answers on LIVE CHATS, but we should realise that HostGator is a BIIIIIG community, and we are not the only ones waiting for support.
Here´s a tip:
IF YOUR ISSUE ISN´T SO URGENT, USE E-MAIL INSTEAD OF LIVE CHAT; THERE YOU WILL FIND A MORE RELAXED ANSWER IN MINUTES. I´ve never had trouble with e-mail support.
We can´t say anything about HostGator, we´ve found a great company with MOST TIMES friendly support, but
I´D LIKE TO EXTEND MY WORDS TO ALL SUPPORT PEOPLE, WE DON´T LIKE THIS KIND OF ANSWERS; a message like “please wait, I´m focused on another problem now” would be better than just leaving us alone in the chats.

Hostgator Review by Leslie121 – Fantastic Service
Reviewed on July 28th, 2004 Find moreAs a veteran of dealing with hosting services (since 1996) I have been through the wringer as it were. Way back when, I lucked out and found a nice one, however they offer only one plan and if you want to resell it is serious money. By 2002 I had pretty much out grown them and wanted to resell so while I left my gaming site up on that account – where it still sits today (only because I haven’t moved it here yet) I was in the market for new hosting that I could turn around and resell off of.
That process had been horrible. They were either too pricey, no support or there was a lot of downtime. If you are trying to start a business and want it to live, uptime is crucial and the rest of it well, that tends to fall in place if you don’t have to worry about everything dropping.
I hadn’t even gotten into reselling yet, but created a small online gaming type community that offers gamers and role players web space for their sites and message boards.
The first one – ehh after paying 600.00 for a year upfront three months later the hosting service literally disappeared and my space and stuff with it.
The second one – downtime at least twice a week. The second of which has the rudest and least useful tech support on the planet earth and beyond. A typical response was “leslie ur site is not down.” Well no in the ten hour span of time it took them to reply, the site was back up. I had purchased the annual plan and when that was done, I moved. We are now into 2004 and I did not know of hostgator at the time. I did extensive research and chose another company with the same 99.9% monthly uptime guarantee, less space than you get here and all the goodies unlimited databases, subdomains and so on. (databases and subdomains are pretty much imperative in a small community) The first few months everything went fine.. then the databases started dropping DAILY after they did changes to the server. (They reported every single change, and let me tell ya, that tech person was obsessed with changing crap). Let me rephrase that, they were being deleted. Yep gone. Just gone. I lost customers that I managed to hang onto through all the other BS and lost them when their boards became unstable.

Hostgator PHP 4.3.8 UPGRADE 7/14/04
Reviewed on July 27th, 2004 Find moreThis is being done this week. There may be 1-2 minute downtime at most. We estimate less than 1% of the scripts will be affected. Please do not ask us what scripts will be affected. You will need to contact the developer of the script. We will try and keep everyone updated on the upgrade on this thread.

Hostgator Review by MaraBlue – Two words: Justin r0cks!
Reviewed on July 21st, 2004 Find moreLast night I was completely bewildered about setting things up using the cPanel, and Justin took the time to explain it and made it all seem so…so…SIMPLE! Turns out I was making things waaaay too complicated. Not that that’s *ever* happened before, and I’m sure it will never happen again!
Geez…this point-n-click stuff…who’d have known it would catch on?
Thanks again Justin! You rock! Oh, and Master_Croc, if you’re out there….give the guy a raise. And extra marshmallows!

Hostgator Review by Purrsonality Designs – The Importance of Security Issues
Reviewed on July 19th, 2004 Find moreI’m an Aluminium Reseller and one of my clients’ guestbook (Advanced Guestbook 2.2) was hacked via a SQL injection vulnerability last week. This granted the attacker administrator access and prevented me from logging into admin to remove the extremely offensive and obtrusive scripts/html.
I contacted IM support as soon as I became aware of the problem and I was then asked to lodge a support ticket via email. This ticket went unanswered for around 15 hours. The response I received was less than satisfactory, indicating that “the pw stored in the program is encrypted. I have no idea where or how this would be decrypted and the administration program for the script is useless. I’m not sure there’s much more we can do on this end.” This would lead one to believe that the only remedy was to delete the DB in it’s entirity and start again.
Luckily in the meantime, I had done some online research regarding Advanced Guestbook hacking – apparently, the attack is very simple and consists of inputting a password string (which I was able to find online but for obvious reasons won’t repeat), leaving the username entry blank. Fortunately, I was able to re-enter this pw to gain admin access and rectify the damage. I also discovered that this attack could have been prevented if packages/accounts had been upgraded to Advanced Guestbook 2.3.1.
I know on the grand scale of things that guestbooks aren’t of major importance but I believe that any breach of security which is brought to your attention should be taken very seriously, given high priority and researched. For around 10 of my client’s, the guestbook is their primary source of feedback and needless to say, having guestbook pages displaying obscene or offensive images/material is completely unacceptable.
In the past I have had nothing but praise for HostGator support but I felt it necessary to voice my concern regarding this incident. I believe HostGator should be working harder to address and improve matters of security.

Hostgator Review by seldan – 6 Months
Reviewed on July 18th, 2004 Find moreI have had a reseller account with HostGator for about 6 months now and have had no problems whatsoever. Everything just works. Any question I have had relating to cPanel, billing, etc. is usually answered within an hour.
Honestly, reselling can be scary as you are dependent upon another’s administration of the server and software. It is nice to not have to worry about that.
All in all, I’m extremely pleased with the support and service. Here’s to another 6 months and beyond.
