  • Hostgator Review by cthesoup – Update after a 2-3 weeks

Reviewed on March 31st, 2004 webhost Find more

I’m in the process of being a former reseller of Dot5 Hosting. I’m moving my customers over slowly, and very gunshy of any new hosts. (Side note: NEVER EVER, EVER DO BUSINESS WITH Dot5Hosting. I would rather put my you-know-what in a meat grinder before doing business with those incompetent fools.)

    That being said…

There are 3 parts to this puzzle: Cost – Support – Product

Cost is good. Can’t really complain. More than I was paying at Dot5, but then again…I’m moving away from those morons. I guess you get what you pay for.

Product is great. Nice features. I like Cpanel better than the Ensim that I was using at DotCrap. I miss my SSH access, but I can live without it. Glad to see Spamassassin. I use it on my production mail servers at work.

Support – Compared to Dot5…great! However, compared to my expectations…good. My first support request was on the phone. I talked with some guy, who sounded like I woke him up, and that I was bothering him by asking a question. His tone was curt, but he gave me the right answer.

Second support request was over IM. I talked to a Woman (forget her name…started with an M) and she was great. Answered my question. No problems.

Third request was also IM. The tech told me to email support. While I understand the IM support people don’t have root, it would be more appropriate for the IM tech to email the admins on the customer’s behalf. Instead…I have to explain my problems…again. Never got an answer from support.

4th request over IM. Told me to email support. I also included my problem I never got an answer on. Haven’t heard from them in 7 hours, but was told it could take 12 to hear anything. Don’t dare call the phone number, because I’m afraid to piss off some sleeping tech again.

I’ll write another update when I hit 6 weeks or so. So far, I’m hopeful that I won’t need to find another host for a long time. I hope this helps those who are refugees from other HORRIBLE hosting companies make an informed decision about picking up HG. HG seems good. I hope they can keep it up.

  • Hostgator Review by redstar – support response times

Reviewed on March 30th, 2004 webhost Find more

So I signed up on Sunday and just had my first experience of tech support (dns servers weren’t esolving correctly). I emailed in a support request and was going to go to bed and check it tomorrow (I’m in the UK and read the thing about waiting up to 12 hours for email replies…) but lo and behold within 10 minutes I had a reply and support had resolved my problem for me

I know I haven’t been here long but if this is the standard of support at HostGator I’ll soon be moving the rest of my accounts over to you! Keep up the excellent work and have a drink on me!

  • Hostgator Review by pva – My experience as a reseller

Reviewed on March 29th, 2004 webhost Find more

I have a reseller account with Hostgator for three months. In general, I’m very happy with this company. I had an excellent uptime, excellent connection speed, great support, and a price I really like, especially for the quality of hosting and support I get. Hostgator is definitely a good reliable provider, and this is exactly what I’m looking for.

I had only one negative experience, though. When I was looking for the hosting provider, my particular requirement was that provider could accept the domains .ru. Hostgator said – yes, they could. When I tried to register such domain, it turned out that they couldn’t, since the DNS in .ru zone has a special requirements. Hostgator worked with me and solved this problem. However, I had to pay $59 for the license for the rvskin. I always thought that if I screwed up and promised something but did not deliver, it is my responsibility, including financial, to resolve this problem. Well, nobody’s perfect….

    How good this service is.
When you are an old pro like me  , you will have been around the block more than once.
If you can think you can find a host with ZERO flaws, well then I would like to meet them!

I currently have a reseller account that is saving me over $100 a month on hosting fees, and I have tons of space left for more sites!

If you want a real hosting account, HostGator.com is the place to go!

And I’m not even a spokes model

Fantastico has been on all new clients’ accounts for some time, but not all of the older servers had it.

  • Hostgator Review by oblomov – Review of hostgator service after one month

Reviewed on March 15th, 2004 webhost Find more

I decided to write this review as I think it can be useful to other persons trying to decide whether or not to use to hostgator.com services for their websites.
I know one month is definitely not enough to judge a service but I feel I can already say something and I promise to give some more feedback in the future in case.

First of all some words about me, sorry but I think it’s also useful to understand better my level of competence (supposed, at least ) and expectations. I’ve been working in the IT field since 1997 covering many kinds of jobs starting from simple end-user helpdesk to sysadmin, web developing and now mainly working as network consultant administering and designing IP networks of differents sizes and complexities.
I’m used to unixes operating systems and I’m a “command-line addicted”

I had to choose an hosting service for a “hobby” non commercial website I’ve been running together with some friends since 1998 (http://www.vagabondo.net/) and also some other sites related to my profession and commercial activities.

I got to hostgator (reseller plan) after having tried with bad results another service (don’t know if I can cite the name…).

  • Hostgator Review by netlooks – Good and Bad experience so far

Reviewed on March 11th, 2004 webhost Find more

First week i have been with host gator had good and bad experiences

    First the good
    -great support, fast responging
    - cheapest host for its features (which is a lot of features)
    - good speeds

    Now the Bad
    - Already experienced downtime (although brief)
    - Experienced SQL failure
    - Told that my server doesnt support ASP and that i will have to be moveed to a new server – i was told EVERYTHING in my account will be deleted even SQL databases and subdomains.
    - Had to spend a few hours downloading backups of everything to reupload to the new server
    - ASP server has different DNS info which will take another 48 hours of downtime for the DNS to propgate again

    - I am not very happy right now, hopefully hostgaotr will understand and refund my money for the month
