  • Hostgator Review by afusion – How long more do I have to wait?

Reviewed on August 16th, 2009 webhost Find more

I’m writing in to voice my unhappiness on how my ticket has been handled.

    The ticket no. is NDO-12363739

    1. For some reasons, one of my client’s domain started to reject emails from everywhere. Reasons cited by the online chat support was that there are spammers from these domains which resulted in the blacklist. Question is who blacklisted the domains? HG? This is important as a reseller because I need to know if I have did something wrong and it resulted in this, I can take precautionary measures. If HG did something wrong, at least I know what is wrong? Answers please.

    2. The issue was left unresolved for 8 hours. I’m still waiting for an answer…. I guess we can all understand the agony of waiting for 8 hours to get the service back. I have checked via the online chat support periodically and every time I asked for the status, it is ‘working on it’. No indication of time frame at all. I believe your folks are experience people and if they can give an estimated timeframe, you can at least pacify someone and also reduce unnecessary load to your tech support for that period of time.

  • ExpanDrive: FTP that doesn’t suck

Reviewed on February 25th, 2009 webhost Find more

With the advent of intelligent one-to-one file sharing solutions such as Streamfile and the increasing popularity of great cloud storage and sharing solutions such as Dropbox and Syncplicity, FTP’s days are numbered. Why bother with unsightly FTP software and annoying server settings when a solution like Syncplicity will allow you to securely share any directory in about five seconds? The answer: You don’t have to. Massachusetts-based ExpanDrive offers two solutions, one for Mac and one for PC, that will make you look at FTP in a whole new light and think twice before shelling out big bucks for a trendy cloud storage solution.

ExpanDrive offers two products that essentially accomplish the same thing: sexify the way you interact with FTP. For the purposes of this post we’ll focus on the Mac solution though the Windows solution accomplishes the same thing on a PC. In a nutshell, ExpanDrive allows you move files to and from FTP servers as if each server was an individual remote drive. By making use of the standard Finder UI on a Mac, there’s nothing new to learn – transfer files simply by dragging and dropping just as you would anywhere else in Finder.

  • Review Zone Site Ranks Web Hosts

Reviewed on October 28th, 2008 webhost Find more

Web Hosting Review Zone (www.webhostingreviewzone.com) announced it has launched a new free resource website for consumers that compares competing web hosting services.

The website enables people to submit and view customer reviews, comparing the the various competing hosting services using multiple criteria, such as price, features, and software.

Customers can review these areas on a scale of one to ten. After each feature is rated, the company then averages out the different ratings to decide an overall rating for the hosting service.

On its home page, the site features the day’s top 10 web hosts based on multiple independent reviews by certified Internet webmasters, enterprise users, personal users and other e-commerce companies.

The current top 10 list features BlueHost as the highest rated web host, followed by HostGator, IX Web Hosting, HostRocket, HostMonster, PowWeb, EasyCGI, iPower Web, FatCow, and StartLogic.

Web Hosting Review Zone encourages its visitors to look at the reviews to see how their current hosting service compares to the competition.

According to the press release, the site is independently owned and operated, and was “formed in order to provide an impartial reviewing service to the public, offering “unbiased” reviews that will help the general public decide on the right hosting service for them.

However, the site features prominent banner ads for all of its top 10 web hosts, both above and below their individual reviews, which might raise suspicion among some visitors.

  • Hosting Sales And Promos Round-up

Reviewed on October 24th, 2008 webhost Find more

Much of this week’s sales and promotion news centered around giving premium products or services away for free (like HostV’s free backup service and HostGator’s newly “unlimited” hosting plan) or for a reduced cost (like the Planet’s 25 percent off server sale and Netriplex’s “Uber Bandwidth” offering). Also this week, DemoWolf announced new Web hosting tutorials and HostGator announced a smart phone giveaway for hosted Exchange customers.

    HostV adds free backup

Early in the week, virtual private server and dedicated server provider HostV (www.hostv.com) added an additional layer of data backup for its VPS plans at no additional cost to clients. According to the announcement, all clients will automatically receive the new functionality in addition to its standard RAID-10 data protection. Clients can now have their data fully backed up without it counting against their disk space allotment. The data is compressed and encrypted, and stored on a separate drive, making restoring data from a previous restore point through an online interface in their Parallels Virtuozzo control panel easy.

Virtual Private Servers from HostV start at $39.99/monthly for 25GB of disk space and 500GB of top-tier data transfer.

“We are effectively doubling the disk space allotment for our clients by introducing complete backups,” said John Xie, president of HostV parent company Cirtex (www.citrix.com).

    HostGator offers unlimited hosting plan

On Monday, shared, reseller, and dedicated web hosting company HostGator (www.hostgator.com) upgraded its shared hosting plans to offer unlimited space and bandwidth, marking an ambitious service structure change.

While the “unlimited” designation is somewhat troubling from a technical standpoint given there can only be a finite amount of space on servers, companies like Fasthosts (www.fasthosts.co.uk) have importantly differentiated themselves from local market competitors using the term, knowing that shared hosting customers often never approach their hosting account’s monthly allowance.

The upgrades are in effect for both new and existing shared hosting customers for all three of the company’s shared hosting plans, which will now be differentiated by the extra features offered with each plan.

The company has also began offering SSL certificates with select shared plans.

    The Planet extends server sale

Global IT hosting provider The Planet (www.theplanet.com) has extended a limited-time promotion that provides significant discounts on more than 50 servers from its innovative line of bargain servers. The Server Blowout Sale, which was originally scheduled to end Thursday has been extended by 72 hours, offering discounts of up to 25 percent on some of the company’s most popular servers.

Customers can take advantage of savings on some of The Planet’s most powerful configurations, including Monster, RAID and virtual rack servers. For instance, a Dual Xeon 5130 RAID with four 146GB hard drives is now $314 per month, reduced from $419 and the Dual Xeon 5405 Monster with 10 hard drives and 8GB of RAM is $899 instead of $1,199 per month.

    Netriplex offers premium Internet connectivity

This week, US data center provider Netriplex (www.netriplex.com) released Uber Bandwidth (www.uberbandwidth.com), a new high-performance, premium Internet connectivity network designed specifically for Web 2.0 priced at $3.99 per Mb. It is initially available at the company’s newly expanded data center in North Carolina.

“Businesses are increasingly using the Internet for mission critical applications,” Netriplex chief technology officer Jonathan Hoppe said in a statement. “With the proliferation of VOIP, video-on-demand and social networking, our customers demand high-performance Internet connectivity in unprecedented quantity. Uber Bandwidth was created to meet their needs with an extreme network featuring multiple 10 Gb connections to every major network in the US, Canada and Europe.”

    DemoWolf releases new tutorials

Canadian Web hosting tutorial developer DemoWolf (www.demowolf.com) has added 82 new tutorials to its current offering of more than 2,200 flash tutorials for hosting companies.

It is added four rebrandable tutorial series for CubeCart, ZenCart and two for control panel H-Sphere, one for end-users and another for resellers. The end-user series retails for $89.95 for the 31 tutorials, and the reseller for $69.95 for 18 tutorials, however, DemoWolf’s Halloween sale ending October 31 lets customers save up to 60 percent off those prices depending on how many tutorials they order.

    Hostway giveaway

Domain registrar and hosting provider Hostway Corporation (www.hostway.com) announced its “Go Mobile with Exchange” mobile email promotion in which hosted Exchange customers who sign up between October 15, 2008 and January 14, 2009 are eligible to win their choice of new smart phone: BlackBerry Bold, HTC Touch Diamond or Apple iPhone 3G. Drawings are scheduled for November 15, 2008; December 15, 2008; and January 15, 2009.

  • HostGator snaps to green energy model

Reviewed on October 3rd, 2008 webhost Find more

Web-hosting company HostGator.com is tackling climate change head-on, a rarity in an IT world that produces a startling amount of carbon emissions.

Houston-based HostGator recently purchased enough Renewable Energy Credits from a Texas wind farm to offset 130 percent of its electricity demands.

“This is something HostGator has wanted to do for years,” says Brent Oxley, founder, president and CEO.

The credits, purchased from Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center near Abilene, will be the equivalent of removing 444 cars from the road for a year. The credits offset the electricity that HostGator buys from the grid to power its servers.

“A lot of people think of the Internet and computer-related things as environmentally benign,” says Matthew Collins of Integrated Ecosystem Market Services, the Chicago-based carbon consulting firm that helped HostGator go green. “There’s a reduction in paper waste, but there’s a significant environmental impact associated with the IT sector and especially the Internet.”

According to Global Action Plan, a London-based nonprofit that helps organizations modify behavior to benefit the environment, the information and communication technology sector accounts for 2 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, the same as the aviation industry.

Collins says cooling one server can take as much electricity as it takes to run it. Sometimes, it can take twice as much.

Making the switch to green energy isn’t that easy, though.

“The first few times HostGator explored going green, the consulting fees alone far exceeded our budget,” Oxley says. “I was shocked with how much of the money would go directly into the pockets of consultants and how little of it went to helping the environment.”

While HostGator was looking to go green, Integrated Ecosystem Market Services, or IEMS, was hitting up some of the biggest Internet domain hosters in the country.

“We approached a number of companies,” Collins says. “HostGator has a really big market share.”

Measuring a Web-hosting company’s market share is difficult because a lot of companies pad their statistics with sites that are “parked” on their servers but not actually active or real. On one list, HostGator and WebsiteWelcome

.com, which HostGator operates, ranks 12th, but Oxley says of all the HostGator domain names and resold sites that clients operate, he believes his company ranks fourth in the world behind giants like Yahoo.com and WildWestDomains

    .com, which operates Go Daddy.

Either way, HostGator has 138,000 customers operating 1.3 million sites, including 12,726 sites from 1,143 clients in Houston (see sidebar).

“We approached HostGator a few months ago, and they were very interested,” Collins says. “We generally fit into their approach that they have been taking with regards to environmental responsibility.”

Collins’ no-nonsense approach “allowed us to cut out most of the consulting fluff, which left us with a very affordable program that has a real environmental impact,” Oxley says.
    Giving credit

HostGator is not planning on raising prices to offset the costs of purchasing the credits, which cost the private company $5.15 each, for a total of about $20,600.

“The Renewable Energy Credits that we have purchased ended up costing us less than 1 percent of our profit margins,” Oxley says. “The new business that will be gained by going green will more than pay for the cost of this program.”

The over-purchase will allow for about seven months of growth, which is in line with Oxley’s plan to revisit his company’s green program every six months and purchase more Renewable Energy Credits, or RECs.

For Collins, HostGator’s approach has been a refreshing change.

“For the most part (Web-hosting companies) are fairly content to not force the issue,” he says. “There are some hosting companies out there that have gone green, but what HostGator is doing is really a step above.”

Of the dozen of so companies IEMS has worked with, and the many others it follows, Collins says HostGator is one of a small few to purchase enough RECs to address both its server cooling needs and future growth.
